An Overview on the Structural Monitoring, Assessment and Retrofitting of Historical Structures with a Focus on 13th Century Monuments
(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024) Ilki, Alper; KOÇAK, PINAR İNCİ; Halici, Omer F.; Demir, Cem; CÖMERT, MUSTAFA; Kuran, Fikret
Monumental historical structures affirm natural and cultural identity and hence they should be transmitted to future generations. The protection and preservation of these structures against aging and natural hazards, particularly seismic actions, requires a comprehensive approach including diagnosis of the present condition of the structure and enhancement of structural capacity for disaster mitigation, if necessary. It is obvious that due to their historical values, any attempt towards the preservation of the monumental historical structures must be carried out with respect to the principles of integrity and authenticity. In this study, the structural performance assessment procedures, implementation of structural health monitoring systems and seismic strengthening strategies are discussed and described with reference to 13th-century monumental historical structures in Turkiye. The structural engineering aspects of recent activities for the restoration and preservation of the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divrigi (a world heritage listed structure) and Sivas Ulu Cami (Mosque) Minaret are briefly presented. In light of the structural analysis and monitoring results, recommendations for interventions to these monumental structures are outlined. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
Enhancing Targeting in CRM Campaigns Through Explainable AI
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Ayaz, Teoman Berkay; Özara, Muhammet Furkan; Sezer, Emrah; Çelik, Ahmet Erkan; AKBULUT, AKHAN
Modern customer relationship management (CRM) solutions are vital to firms because they streamline the administration of customer interactions, sales processes, and marketing initiatives. To fully exploit the potential of massive volumes of customer data, these platforms need help from AI techniques to quickly evaluate and extract useful insights, personalize customer experiences, and optimize decision-making to improve business outcomes. This study delves into the use of explainable AI methods like SHAP, LIME, and ELI5 to analyze CRM campaign outcomes. The purpose of this research is to discover essential traits that serve as indications for successful targeting by analyzing a dataset that captures the results of customers’ interactions with campaign content as responder or non-responder. Using these methods improves interpretability and closes the gap between AI-driven decision-making and human understanding. The findings add to the field by offering clear rationales for consumer actions, which in turn helps companies fine-tune their targeting tactics and boost the efficiency of their campaigns. This study emphasizes the value of AI systems being transparent and interpretable in order to promote trust and enable data-driven decision-making in CRM contexts. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
The Effects of the Developments in Artificial Intelligence and Open-Access Software on the Visions of Academicians
(Brill Academic Publishers, 2024) DEVECİYAN, MERİ TAKSİ; BATAKLAR, SİNAN
This research aims to examine the effects of developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and open-access software on the visions of academicians. The research was conducted using the phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, and semi-structured in-depth interviews were preferred during the data collection process. Descriptive and coding-based qualitative content analysis methods were used in the research process. Emerging themes include the use of artificial intelligence in higher education; situation analysis of the use of AI in academics (SWOT); and strategic dimension of using AI in higher education. These themes explain in detail the potential effects of AI and open-access software on the strategy and competitiveness dimensions of academics’ visions. It is expected that the study will make significant contributions to understanding the changes that AI and open-access software will create in the academic world and how these technologies can be integrated into the way academics work.
Implementation of Adaptive Modal Pushover Analyses (VMPA-A) to 20-Storey Los Angeles SAC Steel Building Subjected to Bi-directional Ground Motions
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Sürmeli, Melih; Yüksel, Ercan; OSMAK, ÖZGE
In this study, an adaptive modal pushover analysis procedure (VMPA-A) is implemented in the 20-story Los Angeles SAC Steel building. The method considers the changes in the dynamic characteristics and bi-directional ground motion effects simultaneously with the help of the hybrid-spectrum concept. Two different approaches are used to calculate displacement demands for each mode. The first one is equal displacement rule and the second is performing nonlinear time history analyses (NTHA) to modal single degree of freedom systems (SDOF). VMPA-A procedure is implemented by using a MATLAB-based computer program, DOC3D. The building is modeled with both SAP2000 and DOC3D programs. Cross-checks are done between two programs by performing eigenvalue and pushover analyses. As an accepted “exact solution”, NTHAs are used to check the accuracy of the VMPA-A procedure. Fourteen ground motion records, which were selected from the PEER NGA-West2 Database, are used in NTHAs by using SAP2000. The response parameters of storey shears, storey displacements, storey drifts, and column and beam curvatures are discussed by comparing the results of VMPA-A with nonlinear time history analyses. Good estimates are observed for storey displacements, storey shears, and storey drifts. Although the second approach in the calculation of displacement demands gives closer results to NTHA, the obtained demand parameters from the equal displacement rule are conservative. Storey drift and beam curvature distributions seem to be in a similar trend. Larger values for lower stories and smaller values for the upper stories are obtained with respect to the average of NTHAs. However, beam curvature distribution can not be predicted by VMPA-A, especially for the upper stories of the building. The column curvature results are in good agreement with NTHA results. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
